BARNSLEY, UK. May 26th, 2026 – John Newell, Commercial Director at award-winning South Yorkshire tanker manufacturer RTN Clayton Vallely, claimed four podium finishes and three class wins during the opening round of the new German Truck Racing Championship at Hockenheimring last weekend.
Competing against an international field of experienced truck racers, the South Yorkshire driver emerged as one of the standout performers of the weekend and leaves the Hockenheimring leading his class standings after Round 1.
The TGP Championship forms part of an expanded German truck racing platform built on the 40-year legacy of the Int. Shell ADAC Truck-Grand-Prix at the Nürburgring, one of Europe’s biggest truck racing and logistics industry events with around 130,000 visitors annually. With additional race weekends at Hockenheimring and Lausitzring, the new series aims to expand the visibility of truck racing in Germany while connecting motorsport with the transport and logistics industry.
Across four races, Newell delivered a series of strong performances, regularly battling at the front with German racer Sascha Lenz.
In the opening race, run in difficult wet conditions, Newell pushed Lenz throughout the 12-lap race and secured the class win and second place overall after intense wheel-to-wheel action at the front. The pair renewed their battle during Race 3, where Newell briefly took the lead before Lenz fought back to reclaim victory with a new lap record. Their battle became one of the standout contests of the weekend.
Newell’s involvement in the series also highlights the strong links between truck racing and the wider transport industry, a relationship the new championship aims to strengthen further.
The next round of the championship takes place from 19–21 June at the Lausitzring as part of the DTM race weekend, before the season finale at the 40th anniversary of the Int. Shell ADAC Truck-Grand-Prix at the Nürburgring in July.
The full silver category standings were as follows:
- John Newell (GBR) 75 points
- Steffen Faas (GER) 65 points
- Stefan Kursch (GER) 34
- Erwin Kleinnagelvoort (NED) 22 points
- Jos Scholten (NED) 20 points
