Research reveals UK homeowners are dining ‘al fresco’ this summer

SHEFFIELD, UK. July 7th, 2026 – As summer hits, new research conducted by waterproofing experts Thompson’s has revealed the UK’s love for outdoor dining. With 9 out of 10 of those surveyed stating that they prefer to dine ‘al fresco’ during the hotter months – and outdoor kitchens on many people’s wish lists.

Whatever the means, being able to cook outside can transform a garden into an extended living and dining space, ideal for entertaining. Whilst BBQs are most commonly owned (84.6%), pizza ovens are also on the rise (27.4%), marking a clear shift towards a Mediterranean summer cooking style. The research also shows that over half of Brits (54.55%) aspire to having an outdoor kitchen.

However, whilst the intent is there, nearly 60 per cent (59.42%) of those surveyed stated that their outdoor spaces weren’t actually ready for use and will need a quick fix to spruce them up following the harsh winter conditions.

Stuart Ruffles, Product Marketing Assistant from Thompson’s said: “In particular, many people’s patios will be in need of attention after the winter period – with algae and ground in dirt making them drab and slippery. Whilst this may seem like a time-consuming job, using an effective cleaner such as Thompson’s Advanced Patio and Block Paving Cleaner can make light work of a potentially arduous job.

“For those looking to cook outside more, it’s also worthwhile looking at protecting your patio from grease and oil stains. Our research showed that two-thirds of UK homeowners had no idea how to do this, when in fact products such as Thompson’s One Coat Patio & Block Paving Seal not only resist algae growth and dirt build up – but also protect against oil and grease spills too.”

Both products are simple to use, developed with ease in mind. Just pour the Thompson’s cleaner onto the patio and give it a good scrub, leaving for 15 minutes until scrubbing once more. Then wash away the suds with a hose down and leave to dry.

Thompson’s One Coat Patio & Block Paving Seal is even easier. Apply on a dry day (ideally above 10ºC ) using a long pile roller for best results. After giving the tin a good shake, roll onto pavers with long smooth strokes – it’s just one-coat so that’s it, job done!
