  • Six areas of concern identified: VRM Swansea | Plates4Less publishes a comprehensive consumer guide explaining the UK private number plate market and how motorists can protect themselves from bad advice and fraudsters.
SWANSEA, UK. October 26th, 2026 – Motorists relying on artificial intelligence and internet forums for advice about private number plates could be putting their money and valuable vehicle registration mark ownerships at risk, according to research.

When Plates4Less reviewed advice provided by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google’s AI-powered search results, it identified no less than six areas where answers were inaccurate, incomplete or misleading.

Among the most serious concerns was wrong advice about DVLA procedures, understanding private plate ownership and calculating the true market value of private number plates.

In some circumstances, following incorrect advice could even result in the permanent loss of an expensive cherished registration mark with no available DVLA remedy.

When misleading advice becomes a costly mistake

One particularly serious risk involves motorists replacing an existing private registration mark.

Some AI answers can confuse the automatic reassignment of a vehicle’s original registration mark with the completely different process required to protect an existing cherished number.

DVLA warns that motorists should remove a private registration they wish to keep before assigning another one to the same vehicle. Failing to do so could mean losing the right to use it, forever.

Another serious concern involves expired DVLA entitlement certificates. AI-generated advice often suggests that private registration rights can simply be reinstated, despite strict DVLA renewal deadlines that can result in permanent loss.

The research also highlighted misleading valuations, confusion over vehicle age restrictions and potentially dangerous misunderstandings about who actually controls a registration mark.

A longstanding industry concern involves buyers purchasing privately owned registration marks for future use, mistakenly believing that receiving the seller’s certificate or being named as a nominee secures their rights. Without undertaking the correct DVLA procedures, they risk losing both their money and the registration mark in question, leaving them with nothing more than a worthless piece of paper.

Customers already reporting misleading advice

Antony Clark, Marketing Manager at VRM Swansea | Plates4Less, said: “We’re increasingly hearing from customers who have purchased unsuitable private registration marks elsewhere after relying on misleading advice, and from owners given unrealistic valuations by AI tools.

“AI is becoming a popular research tool, with AI-generated answers now appearing directly in Google search results, often without users specifically requesting them. Our review found that these answers can contain inaccurate or incomplete information about DVLA rules and the wider market. Unfortunately, misinformation isn’t limited to AI, and even well-meaning advice shared in online forums can be misleading and costly.

“We felt there was a real need for a clear, trustworthy and accessible guide to help people understand the market, protect their interests and make informed decisions, whether they’re buying, selling or simply exploring their options.”

The risks extend beyond AI

Plates4Less’ Swansea-based experts stress that misleading advice is not exclusive to artificial intelligence. Inaccurate information can also circulate through online forums, social media and other sources, sometimes shared by people genuinely trying to help.

The complexity of the UK Vehicle Registration System makes reliable advice particularly important.

The DVLA plays a central role in the private plates market, administering registration rights and selling previously unissued registration marks. According to its Annual Report and Accounts 2025–26, the sale of unissued registration marks contributed over £163 million to public finances in 2025–26, bringing the scheme’s total net contribution to approximately £3 billion since 1989*.

AI tools know this and so give the most eminence to DVLA (because they are a Government Agency) in their answers.

However, the private reg market extends far wider, with previously issued registration marks bought and sold privately or through specialist dealers. Unfortunately these other sources of supply are seldom mentioned by AI tools, even though the best registration marks are already in circulation and have already been sold by the DVLA .

AI-powered searches therefore tend to concentrate on the DVLA, overlook available registrations elsewhere, recommend combinations that are unusable on the buyers’ vehicle, or provide valuations without fully considering genuine alternatives and the current market conditions.

New guide aims to help motorists avoid costly mistakes

In response to their findings, the team at Plates4Less have published The UK Private Number Plate Market Explained, a comprehensive consumer resource drawing on nearly 30 years of industry experience.

This guide explains how the market works, where personalised vehicle registration marks come from, how to buy and sell safely, what influences their value and how to protect your purchases.

It also covers DVLA assignment and retention procedures, certificate expiry rules, vehicle age limitations, road-legal number plate display and the heightened risks of fraud linked to private sales or purchases.

The company hopes the Guide will provide a lasting reference for motorists rather than simply a one-off warning about AI.
