This study evaluates the most popular European cruise destinations by cultural prowess

UK. March 26th, 2025Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has published the results of a study that analysed the data for Europe’s most popular cruise destinations. The analysis examined everything from UNESCO sites and spas to Michelin restaurants and historic attractions to determine which location packs the biggest cultural punch.

The findings revealed that Rome (via Civitavecchia) is Europe’s most cultured cruise destination, and the top five cruise destinations also include Barcelona, Amsterdam, Lisbon, and Athens (via Piraeus).
Italy has the highest number of cultured cruise destinations in Europe, while Amsterdam is the best European cruise destination for attractions and food.
Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines assessed Europe’s 46 most popular cruise destinations to determine the most cultured. Each was evaluated based on its European Capital of Culture status, the number of highly rated attractions on TripAdvisor, Traveller’s Choice awards, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and Michelin-starred/Michelin-recognised restaurants. A normalised scoring system was used to rank the destinations across these categories.
