Summer is gone, time to prepare for the harsher weather
With September marking the beginning of storm season according to the Met Office, UK homeowners are being urged to start weatherproofing their homes. Timing is everything, with new research by Aviva revealing that over a fifth of UK residents have experienced property damage as a result of stormy weather in the last five years.
Weatherproofing typically takes the form of applying specialist sealants or coatings, creating a protective barrier that prevents water penetration, staining and surface erosion. By sealing these surfaces, it’s possible to extend their lifespan, maintain their aesthetic appearance and reduce the need for potentially costly repairs further down the line.
It is important that homeowners are aware of the more vulnerable areas of their properties during stormy weather. According to research from the ABI, 56% of UK adults don’t check their roof tiles, 55% haven’t unblocked gutters and drains, and 84% haven’t installed air brick covers.
“An alarming amount of UK households aren’t aware of the importance of weatherproofing their homes,” said Jimmy. “Take driving rain for example, meaning rain that is propelled by heavy wind. Over time, this can wreak havoc on your brickwork, leading to water penetration, freeze-thaw damage and spalling brickwork. Non-breathable sealants can only make the problem worse, trapping moisture inside the wall and stopping it from evaporating.”
