MANCHESTER, UK. 22nd December 2023 – The charity Healing Humanity based at Rochdale Road Medical Centre hosted a Christmas Lunch for patients and residents.
The Charity and Practice identified several isolated, lonely, and elderly patients who would benefit from a social gathering. Many of these patients had not left the house for several years.
Jackie McCann (Charity Lead) and Dr Salman Shahid decided to do something different for the patients. After several ideas were discussed, it was decided to hold a luncheon and invite people to attend.
This required the assistance of other local charities. Demesne Community Centre agreed to host the lunch and they prepared all the room so that it was festive and appealing. Bowlee Community Centre agreed to their volunteers to assist on the day serving the patients. Wellens Funeral Directors and Status 4 All made generous donations towards the cost, and Tesco Middleton donated tablecloths, serviettes, and crackers. Healing Humanity provided the food.
The patients and residents had a lovely three course Christmas Lunch. Transport was provided to those who needed, and the day started with the children from Buttons and Bows nursery singing to everyone. At the end of the day, they all enjoyed a carol singalong and a visit from Santa.
The feedback from all who attended was fantastic. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A number have written to the surgery thanking them for a brilliant day. Indeed, they have asked for a summer get together.
This was an example of true neighborhood working. People pulling together to provide a day of joy to those who may not have another Christmas lunch, or indeed see anyone over the festive period.
