NEWCASTLE, UK. August 25th, 2025 – More and more families across Newcastle are now turning to tutors to help children rebuild confidence and focus, according to tutoring platform TutorExtra.
Across the city, parents say their children are struggling emotionally more than academically after years of disrupted learning.
According to TutorExtra, a UK-wide tutoring platform, the number of parents in Newcastle mentioning confidence, focus or motivation when searching for a tutor has increased significantly since 2024.
“Our son didn’t need help with maths. He needed help believing in himself,” said Claire R., a parent from Gosforth. “His tutor gave him the confidence that school just couldn’t.”
“We used to be asked about exam results,” said Mark T., an English tutor based in Jesmond. “Now it’s more like: ‘Can you help my child come out of their shell?’”
Maths and English remain popular subjects, but more families are choosing tutors based on personality fit and emotional support. Many children describe their tutor as a mentor or even the only adult who truly listens.
The shift comes at a time when schools are under pressure, class sizes are growing, and student mental health remains a key concern.
TutorExtra, which lists hundreds of tutors across the North East, says many families are realising that tutoring isn’t just academic, it’s also emotional. One parent even described her daughter’s weekly tutoring session as part lesson, part therapy.
“We’re hearing the same thing again and again from Newcastle parents: ‘We just want our child to feel confident again,’” said a TutorExtra spokesperson.
“A confident child is a capable child. Tutoring done right can support both.”
