WILTSHIRE, UK. April 2nd, 2026 – Businesses in Wiltshire are reporting significant delays in recruiting skilled engineers as the UK job market continues to struggle with persistent skills shortages in technical sectors, according to industry analysis by CMD Recruitment.
A nationwide survey of HR and recruitment professionals found that the average time to hire across all UK industries is 4.9 weeks, including roles in engineering and maintenance.
CMD Recruitment’s latest report shows that 76% of engineering firms in Wiltshire are having trouble filling key technical roles.
The shortage is biggest in areas like defence, advanced manufacturing, and aerospace, causing project delays and extra pressure on employers in the region.
“Recruitment delays are not unique to Wiltshire, but the combination of regional competition and specialised skill requirements means local employers face distinctly tough market conditions,” said Dan Barfoot, Operations Manager at CMD Recruitment.
“Understanding national hiring trends alongside local data helps employers plan more effectively and align workforce strategies with the realities of today’s labour market.”
While overall job vacancies have fallen across the UK labour market, shortages remain serious in construction, engineering, rail, IT, and skilled trades.
Employers in these sectors report difficulties finding workers with specialist technical skills, and some estimates suggest the UK needs tens of thousands of new engineers each year to meet long-term demand.
Local recruitment specialists are increasingly seen as valuable partners in helping businesses access pre‑vetted candidates and reduce time‑to‑hire, particularly for roles requiring niche technical expertise.
CMD Recruitment’s report also emphasises the importance of flexible talent strategies, including temporary and contract placements, to help businesses maintain project momentum while navigating a tight candidate pool.
With demand for technical and project‑based skills projected to remain elevated throughout 2026, early engagement with specialist recruitment providers will be critical for employers seeking to avoid costly delays and ensure continued operational performance.
