Development Chief In Call for Better Waste Facility Planning
Local authorities in London should develop a more strategic approach to waste facilities planning, according to an influential figure in the city’s Sustainable Industries Park.
Mark Bradbury, formerly deputy director of development at the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation, believes the success of the waste management plan in London has been hampered by its lack of coordination.
Now the managing director of consultancy Vertical Thinking, Bradbury told trade publication MRW that planning can currently appear to be a random process. He said: “If they move from a waste management plan to an economic development plan, they are more likely to look at a more coordinated strategic approach.”
Bradbury’s proposal was welcomed by Orion Waste, a waste management and resource recovery service operating throughout the South East of England.
A spokesperson said: “We completely agree with Mark Bradbury’s assessment of waste facilities planning in the London area and would support his call for a more strategic approach.
“The waste management industry has undergone dramatic change in recent years and it is vital that local authorities understand the economic and environmental benefits of an integrated waste facilities plan.”
