Car Insurance - Why do City Dwellers Pay More for Car Insurance?

Submitted by Lewis Mitchell on 15th Jan 2010 15:20:08

It has been revealed earlier this month that city dwellers in the South Yorkshire area of Sheffield pay 13% than the national average for their annual car insurance premiums. While the national average cost to insure a car currently stands at £212.99, drivers in city areas such as Sheffield are being forced fork out £241.66 on average.

So why do city dwellers have to pay more for their car insurance policies? Car insurance providers understandably hike annual premiums for drivers and vehicles where they feel there is a sufficiently increased risk of accidents and claims. The sheer number of drivers and commuters in and out of cities creates heightened risk of accidents and breakdowns.

City drivers have the unfortunate problem of higher crime and vandalism rates that invariably lead to higher car insurance deals. Many inner-city areas do not provide safe off-road parking, which is a significant factor. Vehicles parked on driveways and in garages are quite obviously safer and less of a risk to brokers.

It is imperative for city drivers to ensure that their vehicles are secured both night and day. Immobilisers are rather ineffective in comparison to fitted car alarms. Alarms help to bring the overall insurance premium down as they act as a deterrent to vandals and burglars.

Despite the fact that city drivers have to pay higher car insurance rates, premiums across the board are on the increase. Average premiums for comprehensive car insurance cover rose by 5.6% according to the AA British Insurance Premium Index. It is the most significant quarterly increase measured since the AA began to monitor the market back in 1994.
