Australian Airline Quantas certainly think so. We all know the piercing nature of a screaming child. Its a very effective way of making anyone within a few hundred yards stop what they are doing and pay attention. The emotional effects experienced by people can vary from an uncontrollable desire to help... to an uncontrollable desire to leave the country depending on your level of altruism and whether the child is yours or not.

Los Angeles resident, Jean Barnard, claimed that a childs screaming on a flight actually caused her ears to bleed. The airline was taken to court and has lost the case that claimed they had not taken all possible measures to ensure the child did not disturb her... the child (who remains nameless) was sat next to her for the duration of the flight.

Mrs Barnard, already a hearing aid user, stated in court that The pain was so excruciating that I didnt even know I was deaf and was unable to work after as a result of a burst eardrum that resulted in her swallowing blood.

Thus far the evidence is fairly compelling, especially when you consider that a child is reported as being capable of producing 130 decibels per scream (thats just 8 decibels below an air raid siren).

Quantas have not explained their logic behind their decision to settle out of court for an undisclosed sum but perhaps after these comments, I would have dragged the kid out of his mothers arms and stomped him to death. Then we would have an international incident, maybe they just wanted her to shut up.
