UK Vehicle Insurance – Drug Driving Tackled Strongly by Public Support
As many as nine out of every ten drivers surveyed by road safety charity, Brake supported the latest anti-drug driving laws that seek to prosecute drivers who are caught driving under the influence of any class of drugs.
At present, drug drivers are only able to be prosecuted if police officers can provide sufficient evidence that a driver has been acting without due care and attention.
It is also likely that drivers will experience a reduction in drink-drive limits, from the current legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of blood. Investigations have suggested that drivers with this amount of alcohol in their bloodstream are five times more likely to cause a road accident and essentially damaging their UK vehicle insurance premium.
Brake deputy chief executive, Cathy Keeler, said: "It’s time for bold action by policymakers to demonstrate they are listening to public concerns on drink and drug-driving."
Sir Peter North is continuing to carry out an assessment of drink and drug driving across the UK for the Department of Transport, and it will be interesting to see whether his findings ultimately affect a change in legislation.
