Shim Chung is an original production by Universal Ballet based on a Korean folktale about a filial daughter, Shim Chung, who throws herself into the sea in the hope of restoring her blind father’s sight. The neoclassical choreography is the work of the Universal Ballet Company’s first artistic director, Adrienne Dellas. She uses mime to bring the story forth: a blind man is rescued from the river by a Buddhist monk who promises him sight in exchange for 300 sacks of rice. Shim Chung, the blind man’s daughter, obtains the money from an impressively virtuosic sea captain who sacrifices her to a sea dragon.

The SAC on Screen Project was started in 2013 with the aim of visualizing popular performing arts pieces throughout South Korea, and since then has also been successful in broadcasting performances and promoting Korean culture globally. During this difficult period, SAC on screen broadcasted 3 remarkable performances for Indian audiences starting with ‘Into Thin Air’, ‘La Bayadere’, ‘Cross Cut’, and finally ‘Shim Chung’ will be held on 21st August.
