Press Release: March 31, 2010
Research from insurance specialists AXA reveals that British drivers aged 25 years or younger are 30 percent less likely to file for a young car insurance claim than Spanish or French young drivers and 25 percent less likely than German youngsters.
AXA Insurance director for motor, Craig Staniland, said: "Young drivers are more likely to indulge in dangerous behaviours than others and more work needs to be done to educate them about the risks. However, in Britain we do seem to be performing better than our European neighbours and as a whole seem to be more concerned about the issues surrounding young drivers."
Meanwhile many young British drivers are also less likely to speed on the motorways with only 24 percent of those surveyed admitting to exceeding the speed limit by some margin in comparison to the European average of 38 percent.
So why is young car insurance such a pricey issue for newly-qualified drivers and those aged under 25? Perhaps the ultimate reason is that 52 percent of drivers surveyed admitted that they knew someone that had been involved in a car accident underlining the fact that young drivers remain the most at risk at the wheel. A report last year from the Association of British Insurers suggested that younger drivers are ten times more likely to experience an accident than veteran drivers.
