What if we are all part of the solution and not part of the pollution, what if we lived in a world that is less polluted because the amount of waste generated are properly treated before disposal, what if we had clean and clear water made available for everyone? These and many what ifs we can ask ourselves.Billions of tonnes of waste are been produced annually with about 42 million tonnes being generated in Nigeria(Ike et al., 2018). In 2018, the World Bank announced that the global waste generation is predicted to increase by 70% in 2050 if urgent action is not taken. Every sector has a part to play in generating waste with the oil and gas sector not excluded.Day in, day out the amount of generated waste increases enormouslywith the increase in drilling activities. Waste in the oil and gas sector poses threat to human health, environment and climate if not properly treated before final disposal. Bicens Resources Limited is aimed at helping to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 12 which is targeted towards ensuring sustainable consumption and production pattern. This SDG cannot be be met unless waste management is addressed as a priority. Waste management includes the activities and actions required to manage waste from its inception to its final disposal. This includes the collection, transportation, treatment and disposal of waste, together with monitoring and regulating the waste management process.Waste can be solid, liquid, or gas and each type has different methods of disposal and management. During drilling, the amount of waste increases especially that from the circulating system. Waste produced when using Water Based Mud (WBM) differs from that produced when using Oil Based Mud (OBM) and should be treated using different methods. The Water Based Mud (waste) from the shakers are dumped in the waste pit after which it is transferred to the half-moon tank where it is temporarily stored before been transferred to the water treatment plant. The water treatment plant consist of four compartments. The first compartment is a mixer that helps in breaking down the van der Waals forces between the particles, the second compartment aids in bringing down the acid content of water and brightens the water, the third compartment is a mixer and the fourth compartment binds the coagulant particles together. After the fourth compartment, the waste is transferred to the sedimentation tank where it is further purified then to the settling tank where the heavier particles settle and finally to the tripod filtration unit where it is further treated to remove odour, colour and any little oil particle left in it. Before final disposal, the treated wastewater is tested to be sure it meets the required DPR environmental standard.Always remember that it is cheaper and safer to treat wastewater than to pollute and pay forever.
