UK Roads - Number of Vehicles on Britain's Highways Drops

Press Release: April 13, 2010

Although it may not seem like an extensive decline, experts claim that the success of crackdowns on drivers without car insurance and the economic recession that has plagued the entire planet have combined to provide these encouraging results.

Numerous car sharing and green car insurance schemes have been formulated in recent years with the aim of reducing carbon emissions. The SMMT research confirmed that there had been a 1.7 percent shortage in carbon dioxide emissions per vehicle in 2009 compared to the previous year.

The government has also successfully led a car scrappage scheme in recent months, with almost 400,000 UK vehicle insurance customers scrapping their older vehicles in exchange for financial discounts on newer models.

Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT revealed: "The scrappage incentive scheme has also removed a large number of older and more polluting vehicles."
