Thin client approach to desktop software can reduce costs by half and have twice the life of PCs, says Cutter Project
In 70% of cases the use of a traditional PC can be replaced by something simpler and reducing maintenance costs
Cutter Project, a specialist in thin-client computing systems, states that organisations could make substantial savings on maintenance and upgrades by switching from PCs to desktop screens and centralised software. Cutter Projects clients that have changed from using traditional PCs to thin client computing systems have already made significant savings in support technician costs and improved reliability. Many education establishments have also benefited from more secure access to software and email, as well as the flexibility of being able to access the services remotely from the workplace.
Desk top, or thin-client devices, are effectively a monitor, mouse and a keyboard linked to a network, need less support because they are standard devices with much less to go wrong. Data is better protected because it cant be downloaded or saved via the local computer, reducing the risk of either accidental or malicious data leakage. This also protects against the introduction of viruses and other malware.
In his article, Just how much do those PCs cost me? Mike Banahan, Chairman of Cutter Project comments; In our experience in 70% of cases where a PC is used, they can be well served by something simpler and more cost-effective. In place of individual desktop PCs, we have successfully implemented Sun MicroSystems Sun Ray device - a screen, mouse and keyboard - with a network connection to the centralised servers allowing the user to choose what service they want.
Centralised management slashes the costs of maintenance and upgrades - the devices cost half that of a typical PC and last for twice as long. It's also a relatively simple matter to deliver it remotely, using a web browser anywhere in the world to access exactly the same applications, files and services that they do from work.

About Cutter Project
The Cutter Project was formed to share and spread expertise in providing simple, cost-effective computer services. Cutter Project applies well (but not widely) understood techniques to offer an alternative to costly and unsustainable traditional installations.
Cutter Project has brought together concepts and software products from various parts of the computer industry. Each individually makes a difference; combined they seem almost revolutionary, but actually it's simply a good engineering solution using methods that those in the know have employed for a long time.
