Televisions.com reviews the Philips 46 PFL 9704

Press Release: March 04, 2010

March 4, 2010 The Philips 46 PFL 9704 Full HD LCD TV was tested by the expert test team at Televisions.com through the ingenious combination of objective laboratory instruments and comprehensive subjective analysis. The extensive list of cutting edge features earned the Philips 46 incher an extremely impressive 8.3 points on a scale of 10 in the Editors Rating category.

The test team was extremely impressed with the extensive multimedia capabilities, excellent motion clarity, high contrast ratio, low power consumption, accurate 24p reproduction and great sound. The only aspects where the Philips 46 PFL 9704 Full HD LCD TV was found wanting were local dimming artifacts and awkward operation. Televisions.coms editor-in-chief, Florian Friedrich was visibly impressed when he said: The Philips 46 PFL 9704 is a complete package with so much to offer. The positive simply outnumber the meager flaws making this TV the ideal buy.

The review subsequently describes the features of the Philips TV set in detail. The multimedia capabilities of the Televisions are a surprise as it not only plays back media including HDTV movies in DivX format from the USB or LAN, but also can play them from WLAN. The developers have also embedded Net TV a web browser that allows viewers to enjoy YouTube videos online. The Ambilight technology in addition to the gorgeous design impressed the test team as it considerably reduced eye strain while also making for a very wonderfully stylish viewing experience.

The review also praises the 3-way hybrid tuner with support for CI+ encryption allowing the TV to access HDTV broadcast wherever third party receiver operation was permitted. The test team found the operation of the Philips black and blue menu to be awkward and slow and the absence of differentiation between free and pay channels vexed them. The test team recommends the Cinema preset for the most natural of pictures as the TV switches off most of its technologies. Digital TV signals fare better than the analogue TV reception.

The test team found that the PC mode provided undistorted up-scaling of 4:3-format pictures, and the motion-enhancing HD Natural Motion / 200 Hz Clear LCD technology eradicated motion blur. The review states that the Philips 46 PFL 9704 Full HD LCD TV finds its full potential with Blu-Ray video providing contrast of the higher audio even better than some plasma TVs.

The depth associated with night time scenes is perfect. The sound quality rendered by this TV is incredible with the woofers and tweeters providing excellent sound even in rooms with background noise. The review then provides a set of ideal settings for the TV that were derived by the test team at the in-house test theatre for displaying HDTV/Blu-ray signal via an HDMI interface in darkened environments. Florian Friedrich said: The Philips 46 PFL 9704 is one of the few full HD LCD TV that are a complete package in terms of picture and sound and is an astute buy.
