Press Release: January 15, 2010
We are holding a 5-a-side football tournament on 31st July 2010 at Castleford High School, to help raise money for Cancer Research UK. The tournament, called 'Tackle Cancer' will consist of 12 teams of up to 8 players in 3 leagues of 4 teams. Each league will play off against each other until one team is victorious. Last year's winners were Hunters FC, captained by Marc Bedworth. They played fantastically well, eventually beating Donnay in the final to take the trophy, which was donated by Cups & Shields in Castleford, home! The tournament wsa held on 1st August 2009 at Featherstone Sports Centre and was a huge success, despite the Heaven's opening up as the tournament began. It was still a lot of fun and we managed to raise 100% of our £1,500 target amount, even with the miserable British weather.
Cancer Research is a cause close to many of our hearts; there are more than 200 types of cancer, each with different causes, symptoms and treatments. There are around 293,600 new cases of cancer diagnosed each year in the UK. It is the number one fear for the British public, topping the list over Alzheimers heart attack and terrorism. This terrible disease devastates lives and the sooner we find a cure, the better. That is why a group of people from our community got together to arrange this event.
We noticed that there really isn't much in the way for men to show their suppor for this worthy cause, so we arranged this event specifically for them to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
"I know there are lots of guys out there who know someone suffering with cancer, or someone who has suffered with it. They might like to give something back and raise money, have a laugh and play some football." David Dillon, Tackle Cancer UK, July 2009.
ON the day, as well as the tournament itself, there will be tombola stalls, cake stalls and a bouncy castle, as well as lots of other fun stuff to do. After last year's success we are anticipating a really good turn out and just hope that the weather is better than last year!
