Press Release: May 20, 2015
Starr PR Public Relations & Communications and the legendary Birdland Jazz Club’s "Broadway at Birdland Concert Series, are pleased to present renowned Australian jazz pianist, Matt Baker, who will be performing, "Remembering Oscar: A Tribute with 'The Personal Touch,’” on Monday, June 8, 2015 at 7pm.
The evening’s concert will showcase Baker’s interpretations of Oscar Peterson’s greatest work, celebrating his life, hits, and some of his beautiful original compositions. Baker will also be playing some of his own work, paying homage to the legend that inspired his life. The two met in 2002 at the Blue Note in New York, which was the start of a friendship and mentorship that lasted until Peterson’s death in 2007. Jim Cammack will perform on bass, Jerome Jennings on drums, and Special Guest Vocalist Brianna Thomas will complement the ensemble.
Matt Baker has performed at jazz festivals, clubs and concert halls throughout Australia, Europe, US and Pacific. In 2010 he relocated to New York, where he is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand and sought after solo artists, accompanist and musical director on the New York scene.
Matt has played engagements at Birdland, Le Cirque, Bemelmans Bar at The Carlyle Hotel, 54 Below, Smalls Jazz Club, The Zinc Bar, The Iridium, The Kitano, and Rose Theater Jazz at Lincoln Centre, garnering him a special mention and key photo in the New York Times. He performs professionally with some of New York’s top musicians including Gregory Hutchinson, Hassan JJ Shakur, Marco Panascia, Jim Cammack, Jerome Jennings, Dayna Stephens, Tony Middleton, Christine Ebersole, Aaron Weinstein and The Artie Shaw Orchestra. Matt has also toured as Pianist and Musical Director for multi-platinum recording artist Patrizio Buanne, and in May 2015 is touring for the first time as Music Director with Grammy Award winning artist Judy Collins.
In March 2011, Baker recorded a new album in New York entitled ‘Underground’ featuring Gregory Hutchinson, Joe Sanders, Jeremy Pelt and Dayna Stephens. The album, which received positive reviews in Downbeat, Jazz Times and Jazz Wise UK, features a selection of brand new original work alongside some classic jazz standards, inspired from living the New York underground jazz scene: endless nights of clubs & jam sessions.
A student of Taylor Eigsti since moving to New York, Matt has also spent time watching piano legend Oscar Peterson perform, as well as studying with Mulgrew Miller, Benny Green, James Williams and Ella Fitzgerald’s life-long accompanist Paul Smith. He has performed privately for Quincy Jones and played in support of jazz legends Tony Bennett and Al Jarreau.
The Birdland NYC is located at 315 West 44th St, New York, NY, 10036, and tickets are available online at birdlandjazz.com.
