Press Release: July 09, 2014
Sport England has announced hit girl band Neon Jungle as ambassadors for their national campaign to engage young women in sport.
Neon Jungle, a British four-piece girl group aged 17-21 and signed to Sony, have teamed up with Sport England to launch 'BloominGirls,' a lifestyle campaign created with partnership marketing agency, Cherry London, that aims to reverse the trend of inactivity amongst teenage girls aged 14-17, by changing their perception of the relevance of sport in their lives.
The band, which consists of Shereen Cutkelvin (17), Amira McCarthy (18), Jess Plummer (21), and Asami Zdrenka (18), are best known for their chart topping single "Braveheart", which peaked at number 4 on the UK Singles Chart.
The girls will be active on social media as well as attending the first BloominGirls event at Manchester Academy on the 23 July, which will give 14-17 year-old girls the opportunity to taste test a mix of unexpected 'neon' style sports with each of the Neon Jungle band members. Attendees will also be in with the chance of winning fashion and beauty rewards from brands boohoo.com, MUA, Batiste and Babyliss just for taking part, as well as a meet and greet with the band. Tanya Joseph, Director of Business Partnerships at Sport England, says: "We're thrilled Neon Jungle have come on board as our ambassadors - we couldn't think of a group of young women more perfect to really get behind the BloominGirls campaign. Shereen, Amira, Jess and Asami are great attainable roles models - and as well as being known for music and fashion they all have a love of sport from motor cross, to football, to dance and keeping fit.
"The campaign is all about helping girls gain inner and outer confidence and showing how easy it is to make sport part of their lives. Neon Jungle really understand this. By presenting sport in a totally new way - in their speak, in their style, in their social set, outside of the school environment, in a completely fresh, real and genuine way we're really confident we'll engage this tough audience and start to shift their perceptions."
Neon Jungle band member, Jess Plummer, says: "Being active is really important to all of us; without being fit and healthy we wouldn't be able to get on stage and perform with that extra energy and confidence. Not only is it important for our work, keeping active is fun and it makes you feel great - we really want girls our age to recognise that. You can work out with your friends - we do a lot together as a band and it gets quite competitive! Make sure you sign up to the BloominGirls event!"
