Press Release: December 21, 2020
Abstract artist John Lally has revealed 3 artworks that have taken 15 years to complete. The Million series is a collection of works that were begun in 2005. Three paintings scratched 1000000 times to reveal the figure of 1000000, for the price of 1000000 dollars.
Born in England to Irish/English parents, Lally spent his childhood moving between England and Ireland. After leaving school, Lally traveled throughout Europe and the middle east before settling in London. It was in London in the early 90s that Lally began painting and creating art. At first this was figurative, but as the 90s progressed he changed his focus to pure abstract and conceptual art. He creates his works by scratching boards, paper and canvases in the hope of discovering something below the surface.
The Million series was conceived in 2002 not long after the artist moved to France. The challenge was to create artworks using a subject that could convey greed, value, selfishness and worth. It took a while before Lally decided on the figure of 1000000, that he says, is the only subject that he felt, did not fall into a pitiful cliché.
The Million Series are painted in mono colour scapes that are both simplistic and complex due to the subject and the marks on the surface of the painting. The artworks challenge us with its crudeness and poorly defined figures, there has been no effort to make them pretty on the eye.
