Press Release: April 08, 2010
Britains mobile networks are already running low on capacity and there looks likely to be further strain on the airwaves as the governments Digital Economy Billl aimed at liberalising the airwaves further appears to have been put on the back burner.
This poses a problem for smartphones users, with mobile data traffic growing at exponential rates by almost 200% last year according to watchdog, Ofcom. The rapid evolution of mobile services also sees 4G moving fast on the horizon; however Britains connections could come to a complete standstill prior to the demand for the next generation of handsets and connectivity.
The government has consistently targeted 2012 as the watershed for universal broadband to be available to all across the UK. However, this could prove elusive if mobile network capacities are not upgraded sufficiently to continue to provide wireless broadband in areas where there is little or no cabling.
There remains opposition to the Digital Economy Bill, with 20,000 smartphones and internet users signing an online petition objecting to the proposals. However, the worrying reality is that the petition may not even be visible next year if networks have no room left in the inn.
