Ryder supplies first electric truck on contract hire

Truck rental and contract hire specialist, Ryder, has delivered its first leased 10 tonne electric truck to Bunzl, the distribution and outsourcing group, for operation in the catering and hospitality sector, in the central London area.

The Smiths Newton 10 tonne truck has been designed specifically for the rigours of stop-start work in the greater London area. To be based at Bunzls Charlton branch, the truck will have a maximum range of approx 80 miles. Trials with a demonstrator have shown that one charge could last for up to three days on Bunzls normal delivery routes around the capital.

The supply of our first zero emission electric contract hire truck is part of our plan to supply Bunzl with the most environmentally friendly vehicles available, comments Bruce Howard, Ryders contract hire director. Weve been supplying vans and trucks to all five divisions of Bunzl since 2007 and currently supply more than 200 contract hire vehicles to their national locations. The truck carries its own recharging equipment, which will enable it to be recharged from any three-phase electric outlet, and is fitted with regenerative braking technology to extend battery life.

As a large fleet operator, Bunzl is taking serious measures to reduce its carbon footprint, of which more than 70% is currently generated by diesel-powered vehicles, comments Max Harris, Bunzls operations & field sales director. We have already fitted wind deflectors to every vehicle, which gave us a 5-8% reduction in fuel consumption, and we have also introduced aerodynamic double-deck trailers which took the equivalent of two 2 articulated 38 tonne vehicles off the road.

We have also conducted trials with LPG, but found the engines underpowered. We even investigated the viability of Bio-Diesel, but concluded it is not sustainable as a long term proposition for all light goods vehicles, because of the land mass required to grow the crops.

So, weve focussed on electric motive power units because this form of power is sustainable and the emissions from the vehicle are zero. The first truck will operate in London and should the reliability meet expectations we will be launching further electric LGVs in cities across the UK in 2011 as part of our Sustainable Distribution Initiative.
