With The Changing Light is the 24th studio album from Edinburgh-based Haswell
and his first since 2017's Lamp Black. He has released albums under his own name
since 2010 but prior to that as Rhubarb, G For Gnome and White Noise. Previous
albums Lamp Black, Asteroids and Safety In Movement have all been favourably
received by critics with Safety In Movement awarded album of the month in June
2010 by Kate Mossman in Word magazine.
The new album was written and recorded between March and December 2020, initially during lockdown. Haswell plays all instruments with remote contributions from Pete
Reilly on saxophone, Lewis Kippen on lead guitar, Thomas Urch on bass and Dave
Smith on harmonica.
Haswell's key passions of krautrock, folk and electronica are all present here but
with added pop/art rock/dance elements inspired by early Simple Minds, The
Sound, Echo & The Bunnymen, R.E.M., U2, The Cure, Joy Division and Talking
Heads as well as some prog elements like Marillion & Pink Floyd, particularly on
Safety In Movement (2010):
"A remarkable thing - a strange lo-fi tardis of an album whose nine subtle songs unroll from the speakers like a soundtrack
to some bedsit kingdom...the thrill here is great songwriting with an appearance of effortlessness."
Kate Mossman - The Word
“Like a bedroom Radiohead…an inspired arranger and sonic visionary throughout these nine DIY voyages into sound…
skittering electronic aesthetics, experimentation, and impressive shards of noise.” Americana UK
Lamp Black (2017):
"Gothic and dark...sweeping and majestic...this is a strong album. If your tastes run to the kind of experimental trance
atmospheric music that you didn't think existed anymore, this album is for you."
"Rich in guitar and atmospherics...stately and elegant."
"wonderfully inventive and anthemic pop music of the kind few even try to make any more...like a journey through a
peculiarly personal, and tasteful, history of great indie/pop/rock of the last 40 odd years...one of the best of the year.
Richard Haswell is a man to sit up and take notice of." Scots Whae Hae
“… has an edge unlike anything else currently on the radio….it has an epic appeal, making waves across ages and miles… it
consumes your being.” Skope Magazine
