New Hemmels Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Configurator Attracts 10,000 Designers

Press Release: January 09, 2019

Classic car collectors and enthusiasts from around the globe have engaged Hemmels Design Studio to configure and style a classic Mercedes-Benz 280SL on-line with the world's first and only app specifically for this motorcar,

The Hemmels Design Studio allows users to select colours for the body, seats, carpet and soft-top as well as the ability to see the car from virtually any angle. The doors can be opened and the car can be seen with no soft-top, with soft-top or with hardtop.

The colour palette includes those from the original Mercedes-Benz cars of the period as well as a selection of further colours that have been popular amongst Hemmels clients.

The process to create the software, the first of its kind for a classic Mercedes-Benz, required extensive 3D scanning of the 50 year-old car along with six months of rendering and programming in order that a realistic and highly configurable application was created.

Hemmels has made the Design Studio freely accessible on the company’s website. A version for the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is also available.

Hemmels restores classic Mercedes-Benz SL motorcars including the iconic 300 SL Gullwing, 300 SL Roadster, 280 SL Pagoda and 190 SL Roadster. Offering an exclusive new car buying experience, clients order a classic car in the colours of their choice along with a selection of bespoke options and personalisation preferences. Hemmels restores the cars according to the exacting standards demanded from its trademarked Neugeboren (“newborn”) Process where every car is fully dismantled and rebuilt from its bare metal beginnings.

“Our business is founded on achieving both best-of-class quality and an exclusive client experience for luxury car buyers.” said Iain Wood, Head of Marketing, Hemmels. “The Design Studio gives our clients the control to explore colour combinations and viewings just as they would expect when commissioning a new motorcar.”

The Design Studio can be access by the following link:

Hemmels is pleased to welcome clients for a personal tour of its showroom and facilities through prior appointment. The company will be displaying a selection of its classic cars at the London Classic Car Show, February 14th-17th, 2019.
