Models Directs Top 5 Detox Super Foods

Press Release: March 15, 2010

Christmas is a distant memory and spring is just around the corner, so for those who would like to give their body a health boost before the warmer weather arrives Models Direct have created a list of our favourite detox super foods to help you look and feel great!

Garlic may not make your breath smell great but that is where the negatives end. This little vegetable is packed with nutrients providing antibiotic, antiviral, antiseptic and detoxifying qualities. It boosts your immune system, reduces cholesterol and cleanses the liver of toxins. Adding garlic to your daily diet is a very positive way to protect and boost your body. It is best crushed to release all of its properties and eaten raw or with minimal cooking.

Cruciferous vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale and watercress. They provide an abundance of antioxidants, phytochemicals and minerals that protect, heal and detoxify our bodies, helping to eliminate free radicals and prevent cancer. As with garlic, these foods are best eaten raw. If you cant stomach them raw with your meals then aim to nibble at a raw portion whilst preparing your food.

Nuts and seeds

Linseed/flaxseed is notoriously beneficial to human health. The seeds contain 27 identifiable cancer-preventive compounds, according to the U.S Department of Agriculture, and many studies show that the seeds slow tumour growth significantly when included in the diet of cancer patients. Linseed/flaxseeds are also said to lower blood pressure, help prevent heart disease and aid with autoimmune disorders. Other nuts and seeds are rich in good fats - omega 3, vitamin E and selenium.

Fresh and dried fruit is an essential part of a healthy diet. The brighter the colour of the fruit, the higher it is likely to be in vitamins and antioxidants, which stop free radicals from attacking cells. Fruit is also packed with dietary fibre and contains natural sugars, good for a sweet tooth. Dried fruits such as raisins, apricots, dates, cranberries or prunes can be a great way to replace snacks and each have valuable health benefits. For a more highly concentrated dried fruit boost try acai or gogi berries.

We all know that fish is a great source of omega oils, protein and the fat-soluble vitamins A and D. It is said to protect from a range of illnesses - from heart disease to depression - and has undisputed brain health benefits. Any increase in your fish intake is positive but the Food Standards Agency recommend at least two portions of fresh, tinned or frozen seafood, including an oily fish, every week.
