Mobile Phones - Nokia Updates Ovi Maps to Challenge Google

Press Release: January 22, 2010

Nokia chiefs believe that the growth of Ovi Maps has the potential to double the current mobile navigation market.

Nokia Vice-President, Anssi Vanjoki said: Why have multiple devices that work that work in only one country or region? Put it all together, make it free, make it global and you almost double the potential size of the mobile navigation market.

Nokia is the only company with a mobile navigation service for both drivers and pedestrians that works across the world. Unlike the legacy car navigation manufacturers, we don't make you buy maps for different countries or regions even if you're only visiting for a few days.

We offer both navigation and maps free of charge, with all the high-end functionality and features that people now expect.

Current Nokia smartphones such as the N97 mini and the Nokia 5800 will be eligible for these latest mobile phone accessories, with the application set to reach a broader audience including the N900 in the near future.

This latest ambitious move from the Finnish mobile giants sees them clash head-on with Google Maps and Apples iPhone navigation functionality. With high-end car and pedestrian features, Ovi Maps looks set to provide features that global mobile phone consumers are coming to expect.
