Kwik Fit Car Insurance: £300 Million Spent on Tyre Damage in 2009

Press Release: March 23, 2010

Research from Kwik Fit car insurance revealed that 28% of motorists suffered a puncture or flat tyre during 2009, with a significant portion of the blame attributed to the declining quality of the countrys roads which were particularly affected by the recent icy weather conditions. Potholes have become a nightmare for motorists with the potential to damage both tyres and suspension in an instant.

The worst area known for tyre damage is thought to be London, while motorists in the East Midlands are fortunate enough to avoid such problems with the least tyre damage reported.

David White, Kwik Fit customer services director, said: "Our research shows just how many drivers are inconvenienced by punctures or tyre damage every year."

Many UK drivers are guilty of setting off on short and long-haul journeys without checking the condition of their tyres as well as their tyre pressure. The legally-required tread depth is 1.6mm. Anything below this amount can cause a loss of control and creates an increased risk of wear and tear and blow-outs.
