Human Rights Organization, Women For Afghan Women, Commemorates 14 Years on the Front Line with Gala: Spirit Indestructible, Afghanistan Moving Forward

Press Release: May 19, 2015

New York, NY (May 13, 2015) –Women For Afghan Women (WAW) celebrates 14 years of fighting to secure the rights, safety and education of all Afghan women with its annual fundraising gala, Spirit Indestructible, Afghanistan Moving Forward.

“Our gala is a celebration of our ongoing commitment to protect and empower Afghan women and girls all over the world,” said Manizha Naderi, Executive Director, WAW. “We are proud and humbled by our many achievements and are thrilled to continue leading the charge towards making Afghanistan a safe and respectful place for women; a place that recognizes them as equals.”

Since opening its doors in 2001, WAW has become the largest shelter-providing NGO in Afghanistan, helping over 15,000 women and children, and educating more than 250,000 individuals (men and women) on women’s rights under Islam and the Afghan Constitution. These numbers continue to increase as WAW provides shelter and care for about one thousand women and children on a daily basis.

This year’s theme pays tribute to the progress that continues to be made by both the organization and by Afghanistan itself. Keynote speaker Rula Ghani, First Lady of Afghanistan, will address the new administration’s support to help empower Afghan women everywhere and how this marks a milestone for advancement in the region.

“What WAW has accomplished for women’s rights is truly remarkable,” said Rula Ghani. “The theme of this gala is moving forward, and it’s not just Women For Afghan Women that is moving forward. I think the whole country is moving forward.”

The event will feature Rula Ghani, First Lady of Afghanistan, as Keynote speaker, along with special guest, world-renowned media conglomerate, Tina Brown, Legacy Award Honoree Ambassador Swanee Hunt, and Malalai Kakar Human Rights Honoree Mahira Ahmadzai.

All are invited to attend the WAW gala, which will take place on Thursday, May 28th, 2015 from 6:00pm until 10:00pm at Gustavino’s, located at 409 East 59th Street, New York City, NY 10022.

Guests will be treated to traditional Afghan dancing performances, and will have the opportunity to purchase incredible hand-made goods from Afghanistan in both the live and silent auctions. Auction items also include an all-inclusive guided trip to Afghanistan to visit WAW’s facilities, a Food Network chef’s tasting, along with a private lunch with author and activist Dr. Cornel West.
