Fear and anger spreads among the millions of Polio Survivors around the world
During the 1940's, 50's and 60's, a devastating virus swept around the world totally unrestricted, and infecting the brain, and spinal cord, of millions of young children, leaving them dead, paralysed, or disabled. Millions of the survivors learnt to adapt their lives to the disabilities left by this virus and with sheer guts and determination lived productive and satisfying lives within the community. Millions, however, were not so lucky, and were often hidden away by the family embarrassed by their child's disabilities, or totally neglected by their community. Many moved on to become familiar faces in the world of film and television, such as stars as Mia Farrow, Donald Sutherland, Neil Young, and Francis Ford Coppola. What was this virus? Then it was known as Infantile Paralysis, now, simply as Polio.
Some 40 or so years later, it appeared that the ghost of the virus has arrived to complete the damage left by the original Polio virus. Millions of Polio Survivors now have greater levels of disability, increased levels of pain, and intense fatigue, to mention just a few of the symptoms. And what support is available in this 21st century, extremely little. The attack was totally unexpected, and the entire Medical Profession was caught unawares. Nobody ever expected that this would happen some 40 years or so after the initial attack. That this the latest challenge of being faced with one of the most devastating debilitating neurodegenerative condition in the world, Post-Polio Syndrome, was never anticipated. Non-motor symptoms of PPS have considerable quality of life implications and are notoriously challenging to manage, and yet very few Medical Professionals have even a slight knowledge of Polio, and even less of PPS.
