Extra support for cancer patients in Essex

Press Release: February 09, 2010

A NEW cancer support centre has been launched at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Essex to help people living with the disease.
The Helen Rollason Cancer Support Centre was launched today (Wednesday November 25, 2009), by fireman Pete Walker, who recently swam the Channel in aid of the charity.

Joined by the rest of his watch from Chelmsford Fire Station, Pete officially opened the new centre. Charity manager Nicola Douglas said: Our new cancer support centre in Broomfield is a welcome extension to the services already provided by our additional centres in Springfield (Chelmsford), Edmonton (London) and Sawbridgeworth (Herts)

We are very excited about the launch of this branch and hope people living with cancer visiting Broomfield Hospital will make good use of it. Although we already have an established cancer support centre in Springfield, by opening this new centre we are offering cancer patients visiting the hospital a convenient location to go for aromatherapy and reflexology.

The Helen Rollason Cancer Charity is a tribute to the BBC Sport presenter Helen Rollason MBE, who died of colon cancer at the age of 43. Her vision was for cancer patients to be treated for their emotions as well as their cancer.

Fire-fighter Pete said: I am honoured to have been chosen to open this new cancer support centre. I swam the English Channel earlier this year in aid of the charity and I am pleased to know the thousands I have raised will be ploughed into helping more people with cancer.

Its a great centre in a great location and Im delighted to officially launch it.The new centre has two treatment rooms where the therapies will be carried out.
Cancer support centres manager Lorna Ellis said: I am sure Helen would have been immensely proud of how her vision has helped so many and how in the 10th year of the charitys existence, her dreams are still being realised.

I think she would be delighted to know this is the 4th centre the charity has opened in her name and what that means for cancer patients: increased support.
