Dutch start-up makes animated holograms for stage performances

Press Release: August 17, 2015

The Dutch start-up Holomadness (www.holomadness.com) created by Peter van Strien and Amiran Tchikhinachvili is the first studio bringing holographic animated content to the theaters. The holograms provides an interactive and multimedia set of tools available to stage directors aiming to engage a new and bigger audience and change the way performing arts are experienced.

The holographic digital environment will be visible wearing special AR-glasses.
The required hardware (Augmented Reality glasses) is expected to be available at the end of 2015 or starting 2016. The two companies currently developing the holographic technology are Microsoft (Hololens) and Magic Leap. The content will be available for both systems. Holomadness is currently preparing two Augmented reality performances:
"Jungle Book" and "Alice in Wonderland".
The premiere of "Jungle Book" is scheduled at June 24, 2016 at "De Doelen"(a 2000 seats stage) in Rotterdam (The Netherlands). Alice in Wonderland will follow soon after.
During the performances the holographic content will only be visible for the audience wearing the special glasses. The audience without the glasses will see a regular cinematic (3D) projection.

Augmented- vs Virtual Reality

Augmented reality (AR) is the blending of virtual reality and real life. Augmented Reality allows its users to interact with virtual contents in the real world, and are able to distinguish between the two. With AR, users continue to see the real world while interacting with virtual objects around them

Virtual reality (VR) is the creation of a virtual world that users can interact with. VR places you in a virtual world by wearing a VR helmet. With VR, the user is isolated from the real world while immersed in a world that is completely fabricated.

Holomadness has launched a crowd funding campaign by Kickstarter for the initial funding.
