Dorset business optimism grows

Press Release: January 29, 2010

As the UK economy officially moves out of recession, business owners in Dorset are seeing a brighter outlook, according to an opinion sample by Business Link.

While growth in the economy is lower than had been expected, a snap survey showed 79 per cent of business owners feeling positive, and almost a third of those who responded said they were extremely optimistic about the outlook for their business over the next 12 months.

The survey was conducted at a Business Link seminar which drew 100 business owners.

Ian Girling, operations manager for Business Link in Dorset, said: "There is no doubt that trading conditions remain tough, but this vote of confidence in prospects for 2010 is encouraging.

"The news that we are officially out of recession will add to the positive mood, though we all know we are not out of the woods just yet. There could still be some way to go."

Latest figures on the UK economy showed that it grew in the last three months of 2009, but by a weaker-than-expected 0.1 per cent.
Before that the economy had contracted for six consecutive quarters - the longest period of recession since quarterly figures were introduced in 1955.

The weakness of the recovery so far has prompted some analysts to warn that the economy remains fragile, and there may still be a danger of a double-dip recession.

Said Ian Girling: "Our most recent survey showed that the highest current priority for most business owners in Dorset is marketing telling the world what their company has to offer.

"But it's more important than ever to make sure you also have sensible strategies around key issues such as managing cash flow and reducing costs. It is critical that businesses focus on managing cash flow and reducing costs a well as increasing sales.

"Meeting with one of our business advisers is an opportunity to make a health check on all areas within your business.

"The help is there and its free. Just ask us for it."
