Delivery Quote Compare: M6 Toll Charges Set to Increase for Heavy Goods Vehicles

Press Release: February 23, 2010

The new toll rates, which are set to come into effect on 1st March, will see HGV drivers having to shell out ten pounds for every time they wise to use the £700 million road. The cost has risen by over six per cent almost double the rate of inflation.

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has condemned the decision, saying the increased prices will lead to even more congestion on the M6 as more and more HGVs avoid the already under-used toll road.

Stephen Kelly, the FTAs Head of Policy for the Midlands, said: Extra toll costs are the last thing the commercial vehicle sector needs, but by effectively closing the gate to this vital corridor for so many hauliers we are in danger of not realising the economic and environmental benefits that this road was built for in the first place.

It is, frankly, hard to swallow the argument that this extra revenue will be ploughed into major improvements what is the point of investing in a road which nobody can afford to use?

Daniel Parry of Delivery Quote Compare, a price comparison site for freight and haulage delivery services, said: These new toll road charges are going to hit HGV drivers hard. A lot of companies are still coping with the effects of the recession. They do not need these extra expenses.
