Car Insurance Drivers Aged 70 and Over No Extra Risk to Insurers

Press Release: January 21, 2010

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), a driving standards charity, has said that its studies show no significant increase in the reporting of car insurance claims as drivers get older. 8% of UK drivers are aged 70 and above, but significantly, only 4% of all crashes on Britains motorways are accidents involving older drivers.

Neil Greig, IAM Director of Policy and Research said the report contradicts the common assumption that older drivers are a danger on the roads.

While the Over 50s car insurance market is dominated by a select band of insurance providers there is also a group that break the mould and try to entice drivers with innovative policies. Some online Over 50s car insurance providers offer no upper age limit to attract a greater demographic of customers.

These latest figures suggest that car insurance providers are well within their rights to attract drivers aged 70 and over to purchase Over 50s car insurance.
