Art Gallery of Hamilton to Host Robert Bruce in Concert

Press Release: March 23, 2017

An original music program called "Songs of Light and Shadow” by Canadian composer Robert Bruce will debut at 7:30 p.m. on April 19, in the ambient Tanenbaum Pavilion at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, 123 King Street West.

Performing in this venue will be an exciting first for Bruce, who has been producing multimedia events across the greater Hamilton region for many years.

"It is an ideal space for light and sound to converge and for lovers of fine art -- traditional or contemporary -- to enjoy an elegant evening out," he said.

This unique concert will bring together songs for soprano and mezzo-soprano voices and specially-produced short films created to enhance each of the piano selections.

"The ethereal musical effects, evocative lyrics, and moving images can help audience members open doors to enhanced mindfulness in ways that are both comforting and uniquely engaging," Bruce explained.

Some wonderful local vocalists will perform together in "Songs of Light and Shadow”. Soprano Janet Obermeyer, who holds a Bachelor of Music degree in opera and oratorio from the Eastman School of Music, has sung with the finest chamber ensembles and orchestras across Canada, in the United States, and in Europe. Often described as “the perfect Mozart soprano”, her alluring interpretations have earned lavish praise.

Mezzo-Soprano Martina Aswani sings regularly in the Toronto-based ensemble 'Voices of The Savannah', which is known for rousing anti-apartheid anthems and soaring spirituals, and has shared stages with K’naan, Kojo Damptey, and The Burlington Welsh Male Chorus, among others. This will be Aswani's debut neoclassical performance.

Dave Simpson will be on percussion. Simpson studied jazz performance at Mohawk College and Classical Percussion at the University of Toronto, and has performed with several orchestras including The Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, and the National Academy Orchestra under Boris Brott. He also performs with several pop/rock, jazz, and theatre groups.

Tickets for "Songs of Light and Shadow”, $20 per person, are available in advance from the snapd Hamilton website.
