30 Hours Free Childcare for Working Parents at Mullion Nursery

Press Release: July 17, 2017

Children from YMCA Cornwall's Mullion Nursery have been enjoying local days out this summer term including a visit to Tregullas Farm in the Lizard village where they learned about food and farming, met the animals and had a go at pond dipping. The farm proved to be so popular the nursery are organising termly visits from September.

Continuing the outdoor theme, the children made a nature-inspired creation for Mullion Cricket Club’s Horticultural show this year, are currently working on their entry for Mullion village’s Scarecrow Competition and developing green fingers by donating and maintaining a flower box at Mullion Chapel to support Reverend Fran Lane.

Mullion Nursery organise regular community events for local families with health advice, fortnightly Rugbytots sessions and stories, music and rhyme with Be Musical. Last month the nursery held a family fun day in St Mellans Park with entertainers from Swamp Circus, children’s sumo, face painting and a guinea pig petting area! Craft activities and catering were provided by Crafty Slice who also make the nursery’s healthy hot meals to support the ‘Nippers’ programme promoting positive attitudes towards children’s nutrition, physical activity, dental health, accident prevention, emotional health & wellbeing.

It's not too late to book your space for up to 30 hours free childcare starting in September. It has been widely reported in local and national news that many nurseries are finding it difficult to provide these government-funded hours but as a charity YMCA Cornwall is able to offer a number of places to families in Mullion, Helston and across The Lizard.

Up until 31st August 2017, working parents of 3 and 4 year old children can claim up to 30 hours a week of free childcare, starting in September 2017. Parents of children who will be 3 on 31st August can also apply now and those who are on maternity, paternity or adoption leave, unable to work due to disability or caring responsibility could still be eligible. Parents should apply through the government’s childcare calculator www.gov.uk/childcare-calculator then take the eligibility code along with their National Insurance number to Mullion Nursery to book their place.
