The award-winning South London escape game, Modern Fables, has opened its doors to disadvantaged young people in a new partnership with Action for Children.
Modern Fables launched in March last year and had a successful first year, which included winning a Time Out Recommended Award and being named the Best Local Culture Spot in this years’ Love London Awards. The owner, Jay Harris, is keen to give something back to the local community which has supported him.
During the school holidays, children who are being supported by Action for Children will get the opportunity to experience the escape room and spend some time afterwards in a specially designed workshop creating their own games.
An escape room offers the opportunity to use and develop a whole host of skills including problem-solving skills to unravel puzzles, logic to find clues, attention to detail to figure out what each clue means and of course, teamwork is essential to bring it all together.
Action for Children works with disadvantaged children and young people to give them the practical and emotional support that they need and to build essential skills for adulthood. They provide services for children and young people whose families need support, who can’t live with their birth families, who are disabled, and who are the most in need.
Jay says ‘I’m really looking forward to working with Action for Children. The work they do is essential and has a huge impact on the lives of children and young people all over London and beyond. I’m glad that Modern Fables can play a small part in that and hopefully, we’ll inspire a new generation of Game Designers!’
About Modern Fables
Modern Fables launched its first escape room, The Escapist, In March 2017. Based in South Bermondsey, it was also the first escape room in the borough of Lewisham.
The first year has seen over 500 teams play The Escapist. Modern Fables climbed to 8th place out of 425 in the category ‘Fun & Games in London’ on Tripadvisor, with 93% rating it as 5*. There has been some excellent feedback including this from a recent visitor ‘From the moment you walk in, to the moment you finish – we were immersed in the fantasy of the adventure. We’ve done most of the Escape Rooms in London, and this was hands down one of the best.’
The escapist was also reviewed by Time Out and received a glowing review. ‘Other escape rooms take note, the bar has been raised’ the editor commented. This also led to the announcement that Modern Fables has been awarded a much-coveted Time Out Recommended Award and being named Best Culture Spot in the Love London Awards.
