Mobile Phones Retail Chaos Due to Arctic Weather
Mobile phone consumers have been alerted with updates from the Carphone Warehouse on its help blog section notifying which stores will remain open and closed for the coming week. 19 stores out of 800 closed last Friday due to the wintry chaos, with further stores expected to follow suit until temperatures ease.
The arctic weather has not just affected Carphone Warehouses retail stores. A T-Mobile staff member in the south-west region revealed: All of the stores in the area have been affected and had to close early or open late – Wednesday was the worst day.
Among others, O2 mobile phones stores recorded closures. An O2 spokesman said: As of [8 January] today, we’ve currently got 95% of stores opening on time. Earlier this week a handful of stores either opened late or closed early.
It is a difficult time not only for the mobile phones industry. The centre for Economic Business and Research said: There will be a short term economic impact from the loss of productivity from those who might otherwise be working who are unable (or unwilling) to get to work, or who get to work and are less effective than they might otherwise be. GDP per working day in the UK is about £5bn, so if 20% of the population has zero productivity for the day, there is a loss of £1bn.
Reports and analysis earlier last week suggested that the mobile phones industry would sell over 500 million handsets in the coming calendar year. An extended winter cold snap could put this figure in jeopardy.
