MMS planning push into England and Wales

Commercial law firm Maclay Murray & Spens (MMS) is poised to extend the reach of its specialist Planning Unit further into England and Wales with the announcement that Chris Smylie, a partner and board member, is to spearhead its new London-based practice.

Magnus Swanson, chief executive of MMS, said: The firms Planning Unit has made significant progress in the last few years and has, from its base in Scotland, worked with private and public sector clients on a number of complex planning issues across the UK. However, this is a strategic move which reinforces our commitment to supporting our clients wherever they may be. With the volume of instructions increasing, this is a natural next step which places MMS in a strong position as confidence returns to the property sector.

The team has already developed a strong track-record in this market and we will be looking to build on this success by using the MMS London office as a stepping-stone for this strategic move.

MMS Planning Unit has advised on a number of high profile cases, including a Judicial Review for Stagecoach in relation to its Bedford depot and successfully resisting enforcement action by Westminster City Council against Cornish Bakehouse (London). Chris Smylie, a specialist in inquiry advocacy, represented developer clients at recent planning inquiries in Gatwick, Gravesend and High Wycombe. The team continues to advise Wiseman Dairies on its UK-wide operations.

Chris Smylie concluded: This is a win-win for clients across the UK as the move enables us to strengthen the firms capabilities south of the border while ensuring we retain a clear focus and strong planning capabilities in Scotland. It represents an excellent opportunity to broaden our involvement with developer and commercial clients and specialist planning consultants.
