The shortlist of the European Cultural Brand Awards 2020 is complete. A 42-strong jury of experts from the fields of culture, business and media selected 25 nominees on September 25, 2020 in the climate city of Potsdam under the moderation of Jury President Dr. Hagen W. Lippe-Weißenfeld. The competition for innovative cultural management, trend-setting cultural marketing and sustainable cultural promotion, which was launched in 2006 by the cultural manager Hans-Conrad Walter, is now considered Europe’s most advanced cultural prize and honours forward-looking cultural projects in a total of eight competition categories. The award ceremony will take place as part of the “Night of Cultural Brands” gala on November 26th, 2020 in the Nikolaisaal Potsdam in front of 750 invited guests from the worlds of business, culture, politics and the media. The awards will be presented to trendsetting cultural providers, sustainable investments in cultural projects, innovative educational programs, urban culture and cultural tourism regions, and the most committed cultural managers from Europe. In the category “European Culture Brand of the Year 2020” the jury nominated the Foundation Mozarteum Salzburg (AT), the European Hanseatic Museum (GER) and the European Union Youth Orchestra (EU).
Chances to become the “European Trend Brand of the Year 2020” are offered by the Konzerthaus Blaibach by Kulturwald GmbH (GER), the Deichman Library Oslo (NOR) and the Royal Danish Theatre (DNK).
The curatorial duo Yvette Mutumba & Julia Grosse, Malte Boecker (Director of the Beethoven-Haus Bonn and Artistic Director of BTHVN2020) and Eike Schmidt (Director of the Uffizien Florence) were nominated for the “European Cultural Manager of the Year 2020” award.
The jury nominated the Wilo-Foundation with its Corona-Aid for Culture in Dortmund, Germany (GER), Olympus with its commitment to the project Recommended (GER) and Deutsche Post / DHL with its worldwide cooperation project “Beethoven on Tour” (GER) for the prize “European Cultural Investor the Year 2020”.
The JeKits – instruments, dancing and singing for every child (GER), the Berlin Wall
Exhibition (GER) and the Centre for Urban History of East Central Europe (UKR) have been
nominated in the category “European Education Program of the Year 2020”.
In the race for the “European Cultural Tourism Region of the Year 2020” are the art travel
platform Where about now? with the project “Countrysiding Portugal” (PRT), Le Voyage à
Nantes (F) and Via Francigena – Pilgrim’s Way to Rome (CH).
For the “European Prize for Urban Culture 2020” the Monheimer Kulturwerke (GER), Celle
Tourismus & Marketing (GER) and the city of Bendorf were nominated (GER).
In the category “European Prize for Sustainability in the Cultural Market 2020”, which is
being awarded for the first time, the jury nominated the Kunsthaus Wien (A), the Futur 2
Festival (GER) and the Lower Austrian Film Commission (A).
Leoluca Orlando, Mayor of Palermo and member of the Sicilian, Italian and European
Parliament, receives the Lifetime Achievement Award through his work as a politician, but
also as a cultural manager, who defies the Mafia and racism with bold cultural initiatives. As
a source of inspiration, he has initiated a renaissance of urban culture in Palermo with unique
urban projects and initiated ambitious programs to save the run-down quarters. Orlando has
played a major role in the rebirth of the Cita di bella arti, the Italian cultural capital and safe
haven for migrants. In the category “European Cultural Manager of the Year 2020” he is
honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
All other award winners will be announced at the Cultural Brands Gala “Night of Cultural
Brands” on November 26th, 2020 and honoured with the AURICA, a 23-centimetre-high,
waxed bronze statue. AURICA, a Romanian girl’s name that means the golden one, carries
everything that is so desirable: aura, aurum and eureka. The sculpture also stands for the
excellence, attractiveness and diversity of the European cultural market and symbolizes the
valuable mediation work of European cultural providers and the outstanding commitment of
European cultural sponsors. The initiator of the European Cultural Brand Award is Causales –
