imertec crowdfunding to introduce training tech innnovations to UK’s heath service
British tech start-up, imertec™, has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Crowdcube to raise investment for the development and market launch of an innovative Augmented Reality (AR) teaching aid for healthcare professionals.
Last year, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) called on the NHS to improve hand hygiene after finding that approximately 300,000 people contract a hospital-acquired infection each year.
WHO estimates annual financial losses attributed to healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) of approximately €7 billion in Europe and 16 million extra days in hospital.
Studies by WHO reveal that effective hand hygiene could halve the number of HCAIs and their associated costs. By undertaking training using innovative immersive technology, imertec aims to improve long-term compliance with hand hygiene guidance; lower the number of HCAIs; and reduce the use of antibiotics to treat HCAIs.
imertec’s apps and wearable device aim to radically improve the way training and guidance is delivered, with the first app designed to help healthcare professionals to adhere to World Health Organisation (WHO)-compliant hand washing techniques.
The interactive Augmented Reality training application runs on Epson® Moverio BT-200 Smart Glasses. Wearing the glasses, healthcare professionals are guided through an approved seven-step hand washing process, matching their movements to the AR demonstration. By providing an immersive learning experience and recording outcomes for compliance reporting, the imertec team aims to embed correct procedures and ultimately help reduce the number of healthcare-associated infections that are caused by poor hand hygiene.
