An 80ft steel passenger boat moored in Cardiff and currently in use as a tourist boat during the day and in the evening as a party boat is looking to head back home to familiar waters on the south coast.
“Dame Shirley” was the first one of 3 vessels built with Schottel Azipods which are propellers which rotate 360 degrees vertically, which makes her very easy to manoeuvre and hold position at piers and moorings. The propulsion units were completely overhauled at a cost of £90,000 in 2015.
Originally named The Dorset Belle she was built in 1974. The Dorset Belle was chartered to Mursell & Kemp of Sandown for the 1983 season following the closure of Swanage Pier. She was purchased by them in the autumn and renamed Island Enterprise in January 1984. After the 1994 season she was sold to Wight Line Cruises and renamed Ryde Scene. She was used mainly for Portsmouth Harbour cruises for two seasons but resumed sailing as the Dorset Belle in 1997.
The current name for the vessel was given to the boat after a competition run by its present owners who asked the public to vote for a name based on their favourite Welsh celebrity – Shirley Bassey won their vote and so the boat received its current name!
Internally “Dame Shirley” has a spacious heated saloon incorporating a dance floor, bar and toilets. There is plenty of seating and the glass roof makes the area light and airy. Externally there is plenty of seating to enjoy the views. She has been well maintained by the operator and is economical to run. She currently operates on inland waterways as well as coastal waters. The boat has MCA Class V and VI certification to allow the boat to carry 197 passengers.
Dame Shirley is now being sold by its current owners Cardiff Cruises and has received much interest from boat enthusiasts who identify with the vessels long association with the South Coast. So if you are looking for the opportunity of owning a commercial cruiser or are looking to add to an existing fleet – the Dame Shirley could be the perfect match for your seafaring ambitions. There are excellent opportunities on the South Coast for boat operators, for example currently there are no boats operating from Bournemouth pier – possibly some entrepreneur will bring the Dame Shirley home and allow tourists to cruise from this wonderful location!
