Dentists develop custom digital mask for 3D printing in free software

In the midst of the tension that is occurring in the world, several people have used their creativity to try, in some way, to prevent contamination by the virus. It was with this in mind that the young dentists, Dr. Igor Ribeiro and Dr. Liberato Sabóia, developed a prototype of a personalized mask, entirely digital, which they named “Personal3DMask”.

In the midst of the tension that is occurring in the world, several people have used their creativity to try, in some way, to prevent contamination by the virus. It was with this in mind that the  young dentists, Dr. Liberato Sabóia and Dr. Igor Ribeiro , graduated in Dentistry from the University of Fortaleza, developed a custom, fully digital prototype mask, which they named “ Personal3DMask ”.

The idea is to use 3D technology to optimize individual protection against the new coronavirus and, moreover  , in a sustainable way , since the mask is printed on a 3D printer, using a PLA filament, which is derived from the beet peel and totally biodegradable.

The rapid increase in cases of infection generated an immense lack of disposable masks on the market, as well as the exorbitant increase in the sale price, reaching the entire population, but especially health professionals. “The use of technology to our advantage” is mentioned several times by young people when they refer to the idea they had in the midst of the crisis.

“3D technology is already used in dentistry in several specialties and in the routine of dentists. In my visits, for example, the cases are evaluated clinically and digitally, which allows me, in several situations, to predict results and show them to patients even before the treatment is carried out ”, reports Dr. Igor Ribeiro, specialist dental surgeon in Aesthetic Dentistry with Dental Contact Lenses and Facial Harmonization.

Regarding the development of the mask, Dr. Liberato Sabóia, who is also a Dental Surgeon, with improvement in Oral and Buccomaxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology, and studying specialization in Implantology, reports: “We have been in contact with the digital part of dentistry since the beginning of graduation, however, depending on the specialty you decide to follow, it may be more or less present in your routine. During my specialization in Implantology, I had contact with renowned names of digital dentistry, which I give all the credits for my interest in the area. In the area of Surgery and Implantology, we use technological devices at various times, from reverse planning (prosthetic-surgical) to the preparation of surgical guides. The software used, often not exclusive to dentistry, has tools that enable the individualization of cases, such as, for example, the personalization of the “Personal3DMask” borders.

But, in summary, what is the “Personal 3D Mask”?

It is a Facial Mask, digitally designed, through a Facial Scan.  The facial prototype generated by this scan, made by application on the cell phone, in a simple and fast way, arrives at the dentists’ work center, who begin a detailed analysis of the scanned face and the quality of the process. From then on, they develop the product with the help of software that generates the 3D image, individualized according to the scan. Once ready, it can be sent via the internet to anywhere in the world, where your printing can be done on any 3D printer (even the simplest ones).

Among the advantages reported by the creators, we can mention the fact that the mask has an excellent seal , since it is produced according to the contour of the face, also promoting comfort and stability. These factors contribute to reduce the discomfort associated with the large amount of hours that a professional needs to spend, using this equipment. Last but not least, the mask is reusable, as it can be subjected to sterilization, even in an autoclave. “This represents security and savings in the long run,” report the youth.

The young dentists end the interview by stating that: “Humanity needs to reinvent itself. The collective is always and will always be superior to the individual . As dentists, we always work as a team and we know that this is the first and most important step of professional and personal growth ”.

Due to the positive repercussions caused by the Personal 3D Mask and the great demand for specimens, the creators decided to provide a digital dentistry course in the Meshmixer software (100% free) with several techniques used in clinical cases, including a complete facial scanning tutorial, personalization mask, filter assembly and 3D printing. The COURSE is available on the hotmart platform for acquisition by the general public.

For those who access directly from this subject using the code “PERSONAL3DMASK” you  will immediately receive 40% discount, for the first class and for a limited time.
