Action for Blind People has received a £1,000 donation thanks to The New Football Pools and The Football Writers Association.
The Sun newspapers Chief Football Writer, Shaun Custis, has come in at the top of the January Football Writers Premier 10 Mini League. Shaun has elected to donate his winning cheque to national sight loss charity, Action for Blind People.
Action for Blind People offers practical support to people with sight loss, from housing and employment through to welfare rights and advice on IT, helping people live independent lives. The Charity also runs Actionnaires, a national sports project for visually impaired children and young people.
Shaun Custis said: I can’t believe I actually won one of the mini-leagues but the most important thing is being able to donate the charity prize, with thanks to The New Football Pools, to Action for Blind People which is an organisation I have supported for many years. I was delighted to meet Colin and Kim who joined me at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium to collect the cheque.
Colin Vince, National Sports Manager at Action for Blind People, was delighted to receive the donation. He said: We are incredibly grateful to Shaun and The New Football Pools for this donation and his continual support of our organisation. These much-needed funds will make a huge difference to the lives of many blind and partially sighted people across England.
So often, blind and partially sighted people feel isolated from society. Donations such as this allow Action to continue to offer support, empowering people to live independent and fulfilling lives.
In total, eight national football writers are competing in the Premier 10 Football Pools Predictions game, in an attempt to become the winner of their Predictions Mini League. National journalists such as Patrick Barclay from The Times, Des Kelly from The Daily Mail and Shaun Custis from The Sun have been playing The New Football Pools to predict the scores of football matches and accumulate points for predicting the correct scores each month.
Each week, the writers submit their predictions of either a home win, away win, or a draw for the ten Premier League fixtures, over the course of the month. The overall monthly winner is then determined by the highest cumulative score, and receives a cheque from the Football Pools to present to a charity of their choice.
The Football Writers Charity League is just one of the charitable initiatives that The New Football Pools are supporting in 2010. These include a partnership with the Premier League supporting the Premier Health scheme which helps to improve mens health facilities in deprived areas of the UK, and the Every Player Counts scheme in partnership with The Football League which enables 40 football clubs across the country to engage with disability within football.
