Community-led organizations are filling a critical need by providing consistent, year-long support and active assistance to underserved scholars

CHICAGO, IL: Through his Englewood-based, not-for-profit organization, Servants For Hope, Gates Millennium Scholar and local community leader, Deonte Tanner (25), is piloting a donor program to provide the year-long, donor-supported scholarships for local underserved students.

During their Support A Scholar Kick-off event THIS SATURDAY August 22 @ Hopewell Church 6600 S. Hermitage Ave. Chicago, IL 60636 beginning at 11am Servants For Hope will be registering and giving supply-filled backpacks to hundreds of underserved students from local CPS schools. Following a communal lunch and special guest DJ performance, an SFH educator will share details about their community scholar support approach to help confront the current education crisis…together.

“SFH is strategically focused on supporting young students and their families. Our unique ‘community scholarship’ model is being developed directly with doctors, teachers, parents and their children to help provide the comprehensive assistance required for underserved scholars to succeed while enabling donors to become active, ongoing supporters of these deserving students throughout the school year” – Founder, Deonte Tanner

While in the pilot phase and continually utilizing community feedback to set direction, their year-long support program will help ensure each scholar is properly equipped and supplied throughout the year while gaining access to regular family check-ins, online and/or in-person tutoring, homework assistance and other social-emotional help. With unofficial technology partners like Zoom, Remind, Wyzant, SFH is hoping to change the way communities help underserved students.

With each new donor signed on for $15 a month or more, a scholar will receive a “community scholarship” from SFH and our partners including ongoing support for the entire school year.

If you, your family, school or company would like to provide the sustained support our scholars need now more than ever while receiving personal updates on their progress,
