Brought to you by Luno, the documentary follows the journey of bitcoin on the continent
LONDON, May 22, 2020 — Cryptocurrency platform Luno today announces that its brand-new documentary, Banking on Africa: The Bitcoin Revolution, will launch on Amazon Prime Video on May 22nd.
The documentary, which was filmed by award-winning documentary production house Documinute and funded by Luno, explores how Bitcoin pioneers are helping create a better financial system in a continent that has experienced some of history’s most drastic economic crises and mismanaged economies. The film shows how citizens and organisations across Africa have been able to leverage bitcoin to leapfrog standing world economic powers.
It follows key crypto personalities based in Southern Africa, including Riccardo Spagni (Ex- Monero, Tari co-founder), Simon Dingle (CEO of Inves Capital), Dawie Roodt (Chief Economist at Efficient Group) and Sonya Kuhnel (Co-Founder of Bitcoin Events). It also follows the stories of Lorien Gamaroff (Founder of blockchain-based social outreach project, Uziso) and Alakanani Itireleng (Founder of the SatoshiCentre, Botswana), with a glimpse at the spectrum of applications of Bitcoin and blockchain technology.
A glimpse of the documentary is available to view in the official trailer.
Marius Reitz, GM of Africa at Luno, comments:
“Since launching in Africa, we’ve seen first-hand the incredible impact cryptocurrencies have had across the continent. Bitcoin has already shown how it has been able to usher in a new and improved financial system across a region that has so desperately needed it.
“That’s why we’re incredibly excited to release ‘Banking on Africa’ and bring these stories to life in a way that will engage crypto enthusiasts, as well as hopefully bring to light some of the issues that have plagued the continent for so long, and how Bitcoin is helping solve them.”
The documentary debuts alongside an extensive report from market research agency Arcane Research, in collaboration with Luno, which focuses on the state of cryptocurrency in Africa. The 36-page report looks at the catalysts for adoption of cryptocurrencies, obstacles still to overcome for further adoption, the leading crypto exchanges on the continent, and more.
