Author Weaves Classic Jane Austen Tale with WW I
As the UK commemorates The Great War, readers of Monette’s Darcy’s Hope get a glimpse into great-grandfathers’ experiences in WW1 while reliving Austen’s Pride & Prejudice.
CHARLOTTE, NC—November 8, 2016. Imagine catapulting literature’s classic romance between Regency Era heartthrob Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet to the Western Front in 1917. Author Ginger Monette has done just that by shifting the setting of Austen’s beloved Pride & Prejudice from the lavish drawing rooms of Regency England to the bloody front lines of World War I.
In Darcy’s Hope ~ Beauty from Ashes, A WW1 Pride & Prejudice Variation, Monette retained much of the classic storyline: Rich, prideful British aristocrat Fitzwilliam Darcy travels to the countryside and encounters headstrong Elizabeth Bennet. When his marriage proposal is refused, he is stunned. It is here that Monette deviates from Austen’s original story. Instead of a chance meeting at his estate, their reunion takes place at a field hospital in Flanders where Captain Darcy has been sent to uncover a conspiracy plot. When he arrives, he finds his beloved Elizabeth tangled in the ploy. Is she indeed innocent? The compelling novel reveals the answer.
When asked what inspired Monette to rewrite Austen’s classic in a WW1 setting, she replied, “I realised that the culture of Edwardian England was not that much different from the Regency Era. Fitzwilliam Darcy could have dined with the Crawleys of Downton Abbey with little change in decorum. The dramatic backdrop of war seemed a fitting setting for two characters famous for their ‘explosive’ relationship.”
With a love for history, Monette was determined to maintain historical accuracy. In preparing to write about The Great War, she meticulously studied first hand accounts for nine months. And judging by early reviews, readers are enthralled. Comments on Amazon US range from, “One of the best P&P [fan fiction] books I have ever read” to “historically rich” to “couldn’t put it down.”
As the UK commemorate The Great War, Monette’s Darcy’s Hope ~ Beauty from Ashes gives readers a glimpse into the war and the emotional turmoil experienced by our great-grandfathers, while wildly entertaining at the same time.
