Acorn Training Academy Ltd based in the north of the city in Kirkdale opened its doors in Easter last year (2009) to provide vocational and work related learning opportunities for local 14 21 year olds. The motor vehicle based programmes are for those learners who are SEN (special education needs) or identified as in danger of, or are already affected. Since opening Acorn has grown rapidly and has been affiliated with many bodies such as the LEA, Connexions and Liverpool Compaq. The centre has also been nominated for several awards including the Morgan Foundation Awards.

Working with students who are on placements for one day per week from local schools to those who attend 4 days per week full time on e2e ( education to employment ) programmes. Since setting up Acorn has seen massive growth and working together with local enterprise group Stepclever has helped Acorn move onto the next level. Stepclever have helped co-fund a number of expansion projects which have seen a new classroom built a re-furbishment of the site as well as much needed additional tooling. Karen Tate from Stepclever commented Acorn Training Academy is what Stepclevers services are all about. Not only are they creating jobs in our region but they are also providing an excellent service to todays youth.

Head tutor Steve Cheshire says We aim to offer a vocational learning centre that helps develop the next generation of skilled motor workers. Kids that are maybe not as academic as others but shine in a skilled working environment. With the support of Stepclever we have been able to improve the centre and make it a more appealing place for the local youth to come and learn in as well as to have fun while they do.
